1. The main characters are Doll,Bells, Queen, Feife, Welsh, Stein, Storm, Dale. They are all tough strong willed people who are in the C for charlie squad for a reason, they all treat each other tough like in order to succeed. Doll acts like a tough guy and is like a rebel. Bells was an army engineer in the philippenes and got re-signed. Queen is some one who is very strong. Feife is kind of a coward and Welsh is kind of a strange person. Stein is the captain of the squad. Storm is the cook and takes pride in his work. Dale is one of the cooks who found the thompsons.

2 quotations Mike Tudisco
At any rate, the best way to be injured was to have a wound so bad that you almost die, one that would keep you sick long enough for the
war to be over, but not bad enough to be crippled by.

The explosion itself actually – could be considered the apex from which the line turned down to the bottom and discharge, their secret goal.

In the end, C for Charlie saw three men die in the aid station.

They had crossed a line, they were wounded men, and everyone knew they were different.

And one man, word had it, had his face smashed in by a helmet blown from the head of some man in the barge.

Person 3-Nick Zevits

1. How would you react if you saw someone die right in front of you? What about if you had to kill someone?

Answer: "I would be scared that I might also be shot and be thankful it was not me who died. I would just kill the person because it is my job, and that person is trying to kill me."

2. Do you think it was really worth it for Doll to steal the pistol, why or why not?

Answer: "I think it was good for Doll to steal the pistol because it might help him and his company if they get surprised attacked so he can pull out the pistol easily instead of having to get his rifle."

3. If you found the Japanese burial site, what would you do? Would you let the other soldiers do what they did?

Answer: "If I found the Japanese burial site, I would explore it and see what I find. I would not have let Queen and the other soldiers disrespect the burial ground the way they did."

4. How would you react if your hand was cut off from a missile fragment, and the medics did not really care?

Answer: "I would curse at the medics, and then tell them to throw the hand away because I would hate to look at my own hand that was cut off."

5. Would you have stolen the guns from the tent? Why or why not?

Answer: "I would have stolen the guns from the tent because it is only 7 machine guns and 6 rifles. Also, it could help my company out if we ever got caught in a battle."

The first book club meeting, in my opinion, was a mix between conversation and arguments. Throughout the second half of the conversation, after we settled down and actually started to do what we were supposed to do, everything went relatively smooth. Some of our answers to the questions that Nick gave us were a little choppy. We discussed the main characters in the book, and what their characteristics were in the beginning of the book. In addition, we discussed our opinion on the some of the horrifying obstacles the characters faced in the first 100 hundred pages of the book.
Some of the questions that we were asked were, what would your reaction be if you had just killed someone? Another question that we were asked was, if you had found the Japanese burial site, what would you have done. Would you have let the other soldier do what they did? Despite our minor setbacks in the beginning of the meeting, this first meeting went relatively smooth once we got going. Hopefully by the next meeting everyone will have read there assigned amount of pages, and the next meeting will run smoothly with no interruptions.

Nick Zevits-Person D (Summarizer)

The second book club meeting went a little better than the first. at the beginning of the meeting, we were mostly on task and everyone was listening to the person speaking. This was the first meeting we had to enforce the group's rules. Ryan forgot his homework for the second meeting so we had to take his food away and now he has to do his work for this past week and next week for the third meeting. Noise was not a bad problem at the first half of the meeting, and everyone was contributing to the group. I thought the group was improving a lot better than the last meeting, until everyone was done with sharing their jobs and started typing.
Everyone started fooling around and nothing was getting accomplished. Only one person was able to type their part at a time so everyone was waiting for the person to finish. Since everyone was talking and fooling around, the person did not type as fast as they could and kept everyone else waiting. The only thing that did improve was the commitment of the group members. A lot of food was brought this friday compared to the last friday. It was like a feast with all of our food we had. I hope next week the group picks up their acts including me and hope it goes a lot better than the previous meetings.

During this chapter, many people of Charlie Company died because of Japanese mortar emplacements, and small arms fire from hidden locations. Bead, one of the main characters in the book, died by getting hit by fragment from a mortal shell. Pg. 190, Paragraph 3 "'Come on, boys! Let's go get 'em!' he yelled and leaped to his feet motioning the platoon forward. He took two steps, the platoon with their bayonets fixed since early morning right behind him, and fell down dead, stitched diagonally from hip to shoulder by bullets, one which exploded his heart."

Pg. 191 Paragraph 2 "Not as athletic as his fellow worker, but more imaginative, more sensitive, he too leaped up and motioned his men forward, when he saw the 1st platoon move. He could see the whole thing finished in his imagination: himself and Whyte and their men standing atop the bombed out bunkers in proper triumph, the position captured. he too died on the forward slope but not at the crest like Whyte."

Pg. 204 Paragraph 1 "Doll slide his rifle up, raised the sight four clicks, and lying with only his left arm and shoulder outside his little hole, sighted on the man in front, leading him a little, and squeezed off a shot. The rifle bucked his shoulder and the man went down."

Pg. 193 Paragraph 2 "Bell's face was turned left, his cheek pressed to the ground, and he tried not to breathe too conspicuously for the fear of calling attention to himself. Cautiously he opened his eyes, half afraid the movement of his eyelids would be seen by a machine-gunner a hundred yards away, and found himself starring into the open eyes of the 1st platoon's first scout lying dead five yards to Bell' sleft.

Pg. 258 Paragraph 4 "'I'm dying, Captain!' he croaked, rolling his eyes toward Stein. 'I'm dying! Me! Me! I'm dying! I'm so scared!' he closed his eyes moment and swallowed. 'I was just laying there. And it hit me right in the side. Like somebodu punched me. Didn't hurt much. Doesn't hurt much now. Oh, Captain!'"

Ryan Person D

The book discussion went pretty well this week, everybody did their jobs for this week. Everyone this week was very focused and on task. Our group discussed what happened in the last chapter, Mike was going around the group asking the questions that he made, Mitchell did the same and they both posted their questions online. Finally, Nick read us his quotes that he found in the last chapter of the book and we followed along in the book while he read us the quotes. Towards the end of the class, and after we discussed what happened in the book and after everyone read the jobs that the did for homework, everyone began to fool around. Just like what has happened in the last two discussions. So far in all of our book clubs meetings our group has stayed on task and has not fooled around until the meeting begins to end and everyone has read their jobs that they did for homework. Then, at the end everyone fools around. Hopefully for the next meeting everyone stays on task throughout the entire meeting, no one fools around, and everyone in the group contributes to the discussion and gets their work done.

Week 4

Person A-Nick Zevits

The images that is used is fear. Fear is shown through the characters emotions as well as their behavior. One example is when Fife is crawling on the ground while everyone else was crouching. The author tries to show fear because that is a big part of war, which the the main theme of the book.

Person B-Alex Falzarano
“Billions of hard, bright stars shone with relentless glitter all across the tropic night sky. Underneath the brilliant canopy of the universe, the men lay wide awake and waited”

“This lack of water was becoming a serious problem for everybody, and would be more of one as the glaring equatorial sun mounted, but whatever the reason-though there was plenty of water in the rear- no water could be got this far forward to them”

“Stein saw another man (It looked like Big Queen but he couldn’t be sure) advance upon a Japanese man who was grinning desperately with his hands high up in the air, push the rife which carried no bayonet to within an inch of his face and shoot him in the nose.”

“These guys were all slobs, that was the truth. And this Battalion was going to hell on a sled.”

“Everybody had at least three stories of personal, hair raising escape from death stories to tell, and at least two stories of person Jap-killing.”

Mitchell Raver Quotes

1. Off to the left of his disorganized scene was the only bit of sensible organization Stein could see

2. It was indeed Big Queen when Stein had seen him shoot the grinning Japenese man

3. Im relieving you of your command, Stein, he said without Preamble

4. You shouldn't ought to talk to me like you did, Dale growled with authority

5. Well you are a jerk! Witt shouted, scrambling to his feet

Summary Mike Tudisco
Ryan asked his questions first. Many of them were good; they were mostly about emotions or choices. Mitchell then read his quotes witch were mostly about the peoples’ actions. Alex’s quotes were also good with a lot of description. Next we all helped Nick with the questions he had to answer.

The second half of the period we discussed the book and ate lots of delicious brownies baked to perfection by my most wonderful mother, the greatest mother to ever live. We basically summarized what happened in this chapter. After that, we discussed some things we liked and disliked about the book. We said that we did not like how the author would write very descriptive paragraphs that to be honest were boring. We did like the action that was described in the book.

4. If a friend of yours in your squad died right in front of your eyes on a difficultly and life taking mission how would you react?
Answer: I would probably have to take my own life for him because I would feel so bad and I would probably become immediately upset on the spot.

Answer: I would use teamwork because that is how most nations win their wars, with teamwork.

Did you like the Ending of the Book Ended?

Yes because it was good to know that the people went back to America to their normal lives.

Yes because once you see death you can really forget it. It will stay with you all your life.

Would you care if the ship ride back to the states would be just as long as the first time, or would you just be glad you’re off of Guadalcanal.

I would be glad that I am of Guadalcanal and I wouldn’t think the ride back would be as bad as before because there are many people that died and there would be more space.

Why do you think the book was called the Thin Red Line?

Because on the map of the island there was a thin red line and that was were that Japanese were the strongest and at the end of the book they broke through that line and finally go home.

Did you like the overall book?
No because there was too much detail to unimportant things

MItchell Raver summarizer

Micheal Tudisco did not do his homework and disrupted book club many times and did not not let anyone speak, Mike also went crazy and smashed more cookies and hit my computer with a plastic bin. Ryan Patti just smashed cookies and screamed the whole time. Nick Zevits was very good and read everything properly. Alex Falzarano read everything fine and did not disrupt anyone. Overall it was a very disruptive book club thanks Mike Tudisco and Ryan Patti

1. How did you like the ending of the book?
Good, I liked how the surving soldiers were sent how after the brutal fights they went through.

2. If there was a sequal, would you read it? Why or why not?
No, I thought the book was boring because the author explained non-important parts of the book too much. I think any other books written by this author would be written the same way as this book.

3. What did you dislike about the book? What did you like?
I didn't like how the author explained so much about the characters, but I liked the detail used during the battles.

4. What was the best part of the book?
The best part of the book was when C for Charlie was advancing to hill 209. This was one of the battles with great details. When I was reading it, I felt like I was part of the battle.

5. Back in chapter 2, C for Charlie raided the supply tent and took the thompsons. Do you think they helped, Why or why not?
I think the thompsons did help the company because it supplied more fire power to them.
